HPV Explained

What Is Human Papillomavirus and How Does It Affect the Body?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Most people who contract it have no symptoms and clear the infection naturally. Some strains, however, can persist and cause cervical cancer, throat cancer, anal cancer, penile cancer, and genital warts.

There are over 100 strains of HPV. High-risk strains such as HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for around 70% of cervical cancers. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin sexual contact, including oral sex. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent HPV-related disease.

HPV High-Risk Groups

Who Is Most at Risk from Human
Papillomavirus Infection?

HPV is extremely common. But certain groups carry a higher risk of developing serious HPV-related conditions without protection.

Unvaccinated sexually active adults:

Face continuous exposure risk as HPV spreads via skin contact.

Private catch-up courses provide essential protection for those with incomplete vaccination records.

At higher risk for anal and throat cancers; private vaccines are available for those ineligible for the NHS programme.

A full review and course may be necessary as weakened immunity hinders natural HPV clearance.

Vaccination still protects against other high-risk strains not previously encountered.

Vital for those visiting regions with limited cervical screening to prevent undetected infection progression.

Private Gardasil 9 vaccination is the only available route to protect against nine key HPV strains.

How It Works

How Does the HPV Vaccine Work?

The HPV vaccine works by triggering your immune system to produce antibodies against specific HPV strains before any real exposure occurs. If you later come into contact with those strains, your body recognises them and responds quickly.

The vaccine does not contain live virus, so it cannot cause an HPV infection. It is most effective before exposure but still offers meaningful protection for those who are already sexually active.

Gardasil 9

£170

Gardasil 9 is the human papillomavirus vaccine used in both the UK NHS programme and private clinics. It protects against nine HPV strains: HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. These strains account for the majority of cervical cancers, anal cancers, throat cancers, and genital warts.

The vaccine works by prompting the immune system to produce antibodies before any exposure to the virus occurs. It is most effective when given before sexual activity begins, but clinical evidence supports its use in adults who are already sexually active. Getting vaccinated now still significantly reduces your risk of HPV-related disease.

Some people feel faint shortly after the injection, which is why we ask you to remain seated for a few minutes afterwards. Serious reactions are rare. Our pharmacist will talk you through what to expect before and after your vaccination.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the HPV vaccine if I am already sexually active?

Yes. The vaccine still protects against strains you have not yet been exposed to. Even partial protection is clinically worthwhile, and many adults receive it later in life with good results.

No. HPV affects men and women. The vaccine protects against genital warts and several cancers that occur in both sexes, including anal and throat cancers. Men who have sex with men are specifically at higher risk.

Current evidence shows that protection from Gardasil 9 lasts at least 12 years, with no confirmed need for a booster at this time. Ongoing studies continue to monitor long-term immunity.

Yes. An abnormal smear does not mean you have been exposed to all nine strains covered by the vaccine. Vaccination can still protect against strains you have not encountered. Speak to our pharmacist if you have any concerns.

You do not need to restart. Muhammad's Pharmacy can complete your remaining doses privately. Our pharmacist will review your vaccination history and confirm exactly what you need.
