The NHS Blood Pressure Check Service is designed to help identify people who may have high blood pressure without knowing it. Under the current NHS criteria, eligible patients can normally receive an NHS-funded clinic blood pressure check once every five years.
If you do not qualify for a free NHS check, you can still have your blood pressure checked at a low cost at Muhammad's Pharmacy.
In certain clinical circumstances, another NHS blood pressure check may be appropriate within the five-year period. Our pharmacy team will assess this in line with the NHS service criteria.
Every reading shows two numbers: the systolic pressure (when your heart beats) and the diastolic pressure (when it rests). Refer to the blood pressure chart below. Your pharmacist will clearly explain your results.

The blood pressure chart above provides general reference ranges only. Your pharmacist will interpret your result in the context of your personal health history.
Your reading is within a healthy range. Maintain healthy habits. If hypertension is not identified, another blood pressure check is generally recommended within five years, although more frequent monitoring may be advised in certain circumstances.
Your reading is above the ideal range but not at a clinically high level. We might suggest ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to get a complete view over 24 hours.
A high reading does not mean an emergency, but it does need attention. Your pharmacist will explain your result clearly and refer you to your GP with a written summary of your reading.
You will be asked to sit quietly for a few minutes before the reading is taken. This is part of a simple blood pressure checklist our team follows to make sure your result is as accurate as possible.
The cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated briefly. The reading takes around 60 seconds and is completely comfortable.
Your pharmacist or trained team member will explain your result straight away. If a follow-up is needed, you will leave knowing exactly what your next step is.

ABPM involves wearing a small device for 24 hours that records your blood pressure at regular intervals. It is offered when a single clinic reading is high, to confirm whether hypertension is present before any GP referral is made.
Yes. We use a clinically validated device (on the British and Irish Hypertension Society list), regularly calibrated.
If your blood pressure is already regularly monitored by a healthcare professional, or you are being treated for diagnosed hypertension, you would not normally be eligible for an NHS-funded clinic check through this service. However, healthcare professionals can refer eligible patients for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) where appropriate.
Yes. If you are under 40 with a family history of hypertension, or if you have a long-term condition such as diabetes, you may be eligible. Anyone concerned about their blood pressure is welcome to speak to our pharmacist.
