Pressure Reading

A trained team member takes your reading using a BHF-approved, regularly calibrated device. The process is painless and takes around 60 seconds.

Step 2

Results Explained and Next Steps Advised

Your pharmacist explains your result clearly before you leave. If further action is needed, including a GP referral or ambulatory monitoring, you will be told exactly what to do next.

Step 3

Blood Pressure Triggers

What Causes High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure rises when the heart has to work harder to move blood through the arteries. Over time, this puts strain on blood vessels, the heart, and the kidneys.

Common causes include a high-salt diet, physical inactivity, excess weight, smoking, and regular alcohol intake. Chronic stress and poor sleep also contribute.

Some people develop high blood pressure due to genetics or an underlying condition such as diabetes or kidney disease. Consistent blood pressure control begins with understanding your numbers.

Free Check Eligibility

Who Is Eligible for a Free Blood Pressure Check in London?

The NHS Blood Pressure Check Service is designed to help identify people who may have high blood pressure without knowing it. Under the current NHS criteria, eligible patients can normally receive an NHS-funded clinic blood pressure check once every five years.

If you do not qualify for a free NHS check, you can still have your blood pressure checked at a low cost at Muhammad's Pharmacy.

In certain clinical circumstances, another NHS blood pressure check may be appropriate within the five-year period. Our pharmacy team will assess this in line with the NHS service criteria.

Explanation

Your Blood Pressure Reading Explained

Every reading shows two numbers: the systolic pressure (when your heart beats) and the diastolic pressure (when it rests). Refer to the blood pressure chart below. Your pharmacist will clearly explain your results.

Reading Status Guide

What Your Result Means

Maintain healthy habits and get a check-up every five years.

Your reading is within a healthy range. Maintain healthy habits. If hypertension is not identified, another blood pressure check is generally recommended within five years, although more frequent monitoring may be advised in certain circumstances.

Elevated, Worth Monitoring

Your reading is above the ideal range but not at a clinically high level. We might suggest ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to get a complete view over 24 hours.

High Blood Pressure, Action Needed

A high reading does not mean an emergency, but it does need attention. Your pharmacist will explain your result clearly and refer you to your GP with a written summary of your reading.

What to Expect

What to Expect During Your Blood Pressure Check

You will be asked to sit quietly for a few minutes before the reading is taken. This is part of a simple blood pressure checklist our team follows to make sure your result is as accurate as possible.

The cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated briefly. The reading takes around 60 seconds and is completely comfortable.

Your pharmacist or trained team member will explain your result straight away. If a follow-up is needed, you will leave knowing exactly what your next step is.

Eligible Group

Frequently Recommended by NHS for These Groups

A blood pressure check is a routine part of NHS healthcare for many people, not just those who feel unwell. If you fall into any of the groups below, regular monitoring is widely recommended.

Group

Why It Is Recommended

Adults aged 40 and over

Blood pressure rises naturally with age; early detection prevents long-term harm

People with diabetes

Diabetes raises the risk of cardiovascular complications linked to elevated blood pressure

Those with a family history of hypertension

Genetics play a strong role; a family history raises your lifetime risk considerably

Overweight or obese patients

Excess weight increases strain on the heart and arteries over time

Smokers

Smoking narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure, increasing stroke risk

People with high stress levels or a sedentary lifestyle

Chronic stress and inactivity both contribute to raised readings over time

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything before my blood pressure check?

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and exercise for at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Wear loose clothing so the cuff fits comfortably on your upper arm. Arrive a few minutes early and sit quietly before your reading is taken.

ABPM involves wearing a small device for 24 hours that records your blood pressure at regular intervals. It is offered when a single clinic reading is high, to confirm whether hypertension is present before any GP referral is made.

Yes. We use a clinically validated device (on the British and Irish Hypertension Society list), regularly calibrated.

If your blood pressure is already regularly monitored by a healthcare professional, or you are being treated for diagnosed hypertension, you would not normally be eligible for an NHS-funded clinic check through this service. However, healthcare professionals can refer eligible patients for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) where appropriate.

Yes. If you are under 40 with a family history of hypertension, or if you have a long-term condition such as diabetes, you may be eligible. Anyone concerned about their blood pressure is welcome to speak to our pharmacist.
