Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. It is more common than most people realise and can affect men of all ages.

The main symptom is difficulty getting or keeping an erection during sexual activity. Some men notice their erections are less firm than usual, while others cannot sustain one to completion.
Reduced sexual desire is also common. Occasional difficulty is normal, but if symptoms have been present for several weeks or more, it is worth speaking to a prescriber to rule out an underlying cause.
Sildenafil is the generic form of Viagra and the most widely prescribed erectile dysfunction medication in the UK. It works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis, helping you achieve an erection when sexually aroused.
Available in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg doses, it is taken 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. Most men start on 50mg, and the dose can be adjusted at a follow-up if needed.
Tadalafil is the generic form of Cialis and is best known for lasting up to 36 hours on a single on-demand dose. Unlike Sildenafil, it does not need to be timed closely around sexual activity, making it a popular choice for men who prefer a more spontaneous approach.
It is also available as a low daily dose of 2.5mg or 5mg for men who want continuous coverage. Your prescriber will help you decide whether on-demand or daily treatment suits you better.
Vardenafil works in the same way as Sildenafil but may be better tolerated by some men or produce a faster onset of action. It is a suitable alternative for men who have not responded well to Sildenafil or have experienced side effects with it.

PDE5 inhibitors are generally well tolerated. Common side effects include headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, and indigestion. These are usually mild and settle within a few hours.
A small number of men experience dizziness or visual changes. If you develop chest pain, a sudden drop in vision or hearing, or a prolonged erection lasting more than four hours, stop taking the medication and seek urgent medical attention.
