Norethisterone is a synthetic form of progesterone. It keeps your levels high. This stops the hormonal drop that usually starts your period. Take one 5mg tablet three times a day. Start this three days before your expected period. Once you stop taking it, your period will usually begin within a few days.
Period delay treatment is suitable for most healthy women who want to delay their period for an event. However, our prescriber will check if it's right for you during your consultation.

Norethisterone 5mg is a synthetic progestogen that delays your period by maintaining the hormone levels that keep it at bay. You take one tablet three times daily, beginning three days before your expected period, for a maximum of 27 days. It is not a contraceptive and does not protect against pregnancy. If you take the combined contraceptive pill, you may be able to delay your withdrawal bleed by taking packs back-to-back. If you are on the progesterone only pill (POP), you cannot use this method and would need to discuss switching options with our pharmacist instead.
Common side effects of period delay treatment are breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, and mild nausea. Some women notice light spotting while taking the tablets, which is normal.
Norethisterone has a slight risk of blood clots. So, it isn’t safe for women with a personal or family history of thrombosis. Our prescriber will discuss this with you before issuing your prescription.

Norethisterone can delay your period when taken as directed. You can use it for up to 27 days and take a maximum of 81 tablets. Don't use it more than once every six months unless your GP advises otherwise. Your period will typically return within two to three days of stopping the tablets.
It might feel a bit heavier at first, but that's normal. Your cycle will go back to its usual pattern. The treatment has no lasting effect on your long-term menstrual cycle.

Yes. You do not need to have taken Norethisterone previously to be eligible. Our prescriber will complete a clinical assessment at your consultation and confirm whether it is appropriate for you based on your health history.
No. Norethisterone is not effective once your period has already begun. You need to start taking it at least three days before your period is due for it to work. If your period has already started, speak to our pharmacist about your options.
There is no direct interaction between Norethisterone and alcohol. However, alcohol can worsen some of the common side effects, including headaches and nausea, so drinking in moderation is advisable during the course.
Most women can use Norethisterone more than once. It is not intended for regular or repeated use as a long-term solution. If you find yourself needing to delay your period frequently, your GP can advise on longer-term cycle management.
We recommend booking as soon as you know your event date. You need to start Norethisterone at least three days before your expected period, so early booking gives you the best chance of receiving your prescription in time. Same-day appointments are often available.
