The virus spreads through direct contact with the rash or through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People are contagious from one to two days before the rash appears until all blisters have crusted over. This makes it easy to pass on before anyone knows they are infected.
Symptoms include an itchy blister-like rash, fever, and fatigue. Most children recover within one to two weeks. Adults, pregnant women, newborns, and immunocompromised patients face a higher risk of complications such as bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis.
The chickenpox vaccine contains a weakened live form of the varicella-zoster virus. After vaccination, your immune system builds antibodies without you having to go through the infection itself.
Two doses are needed for the best protection. Most people who are vaccinated either avoid chickenpox entirely or have a much milder illness if they do catch it.
